Real Life. Real experience. Real service.
God is raising up a new generation who want more than a classroom education. They want life experience serving and learning in a diverse urban environment. The Nehemiah House is the place where it can happen.
It will be a year to grow, a year to mold values, and a year to understand what God’s heart of compassion may have to do with the interns’ future. It will be a year to change them forever. As they reach out to their neighbors, they will be challenged by the injustice they see before them–challenged to work for change in the name of Jesus.

Built in 1897, this extraordinary 4-unit house was at one time used as a boarding house. Located blocks away from the church, the house is in Pico Union–a largely immigrant Latino community that lies in the shadow of downtown Los Angeles.

In addition to studying and house bible studies and prayer, interns will spend 5-20 hours serving in the community through holistic ministries. Most of the interns work with youth or children through mentoring and discipleship ministries. There are currently paid internship positions available in the S.A.Y. Yes! Center for Youth Development which provides an after-school program and holistic mentoring for children and youth in Pico Union.

The internship costs $550/month. This includes room, board, gas money, and conferences/retreats during the year. There are scholarships and opportunities to raise support for those who need it.

The house community is directed by Scott and Sarah Yetter (live-in staff). We are an intentional community seeking to help truly live out the Gospel as a family together and in our relationships with the community. We believe that community is a gift that God has given us and one that the church rarely experiences in our individualistic and disconnected culture. We are committed to loving each other deeply and letting God form us into a community. In addition, we commit ourselves to a common set of basic lifestyle values that reflect our call to live lives of simplicity inwardly and outwardly.

Loving God, Loving the Community of Believers & Loving our Neighbors

Living by the Word with Reckless Abandon - We are committed to the Word of God as both our authority for life and ministry and our food as we live by faith in God and his promises.
Prayer - We are committed to hearing from God, intercession, and worship as essential disciplines to abiding in God.
Rest & Reflection - We are committed to taking regular time to rest, reflect, and celebrate knowing that overwork is a common and dangerous temptation in areas of great need. Furthermore we are committed to guarding against “busyness” recognizing that incarnational ministry requires time just to be present and hospitable.

Loving Each Other in the House Community Deeply - We are committed to loving one another by investing time in listening and sharing.
Respecting Diversity - We are committed to appreciating differences and accepting one another.
Responsibility - We are committed to dealing rightly with conflicts and differences being both honest and humble.
Loving the Church – We are committed to being a part of the local church and loving and respecting the larger body of believers.

Being Examples - We are committed to living above reproach and abstaining from things that may cause others to stumble. More importantly, we are committed to mentoring – following and loving Jesus in such a way that others will follow our example.
Incarnational Living - We are committed to living a lifestyle of simplicity as a biblical mandate and to identification with our neighbors.
